An esthetician shares how she treated a client's hormonal hyperpigmentation (melasma) without lasers. Learn the gentle yet effective approach that put out the fire and restored her skin's glow.
As an esthetician with nearly 40 years of experience, I've learned that real results come from being part of my clients' journey. It's not just about what happens in the treatment room. It's about the whole picture: professional treatments plus a focused skincare routine tailored to their skin type. I call this an "Action Plan." It keeps the progress going at home, where it really counts.
I'm starting a new series called "How I Did This." I'll spotlight clients who tried everything but got nowhere. They were confused, frustrated, and had a fire burning inside that no one could put out. Until they trusted me with their skin.
Hormonal hyperpigmentation is one of the toughest concerns to treat. Let's dive into how I got incredible results for one client. Her name is Natalie.
### Meet Natalie
Natalie first came to see me in 2013. We worked out at the same gym back then. After multiple pregnancies, she was left with years of hyperpigmentation. Blotchy brown patches, also known as melasma, covered her face. By the time she sat down in my treatment chair, she was exhausted. Honestly, she was defeated.

### Assessing Natalie's Skin
Every consultation starts with what I call "fingertip forensics." I've always thought of myself as a detective. Through touching, feeling, and asking lots of questions, I get to the bottom of things.
Natalie's pigmentation was deep. Her skin barrier was dry and compromised. Her skin looked dull, like she had lost her glow. She'd had a few facials and light peels here and there. But she still wasn't seeing any results.
### The Action Plan: Put the Fire Out
Here's what I know about hyperpigmentation: the more aggressive you are, the more you can keep pigment cells awake. It's like trying to control a fire by adding fuel. The more you do, the worse it gets. These pigment cells are super active and sensitive to heat, aggression, and any trauma. So my approach is always to "put the fire out."
The goal was to get her skin barrier into a really healthy state. That way, we could be a bit more aggressive with treatments. Because that's what it takes to remove stubborn pigment. Once I felt her barrier rebuilding, we introduced brightening actives very carefully.
At home, her job was simple. Follow the Action Plan I created for her skin type (type 6). Focus on keeping things calm. Stay consistent. And most importantly, wear vitamin C, sunscreen, and foundation makeup every single day. This puts her skin on "lockdown." It prevents UV rays from disrupting our progress.
### What I Did in the Treatment Room (2013)
Natalie came to me back in 2013. So keep in mind these were the tools and techniques available then. (I'll tell you how I'd treat her today in a future post.) But for now, here's her exact treatment back then.
Every two weeks, we did a 20% salicylic acid skin peel. Then we followed with Bio Brasion, a modern form of microdermabrasion for physical exfoliation. We ended with a leave-on vitamin A/retinol peeling cream.
This accomplished three things:
- The acid peel dissolved and digested surface pigment cells. It was gentle but powerful enough to avoid inflammation or burning.
- The physical exfoliation from Bio Brasion gave a lifting action. It helped pull off some of those stained cells.
- The leave-on retinol cream gave her skin shedding and peeling for the next two to three days.
Results from Bio Brasion vary for each client. Every person's skin is different. While Natalie had exceptional results, there's no guarantee your skin will respond the same way.
### What I Had Natalie Do at Home
She followed the exact plan for skin type 6. Here's her morning routine:
**Step 1: Cleanse with Mint Renewal Cleanser** - This starts the day fresh and preps the skin.
**Step 2: Energy Boosting Toner** - It helps balance and energize the skin.
**Step 3: Vitamin C&E Treatment** - This brightens and protects against environmental damage.
**Step 4: Apply Weightless Protection SPF 30** - Sunscreen is non-negotiable. It locks in all the progress.
Consistency is key. Natalie stuck to this plan, and her skin transformed. No lasers needed, just smart, gentle care.
